We are a group of researchers in the Department of Psychology at the Southern Illinois University Carbondale. We are conducting a web-based survey to understand students’ responses to videos/documentaries that are available online and free to the public. This research can help us understand students’ reactions to certain online media and how such online media may be used in the classroom. In order to participate in the study, you must self-identify as a student who is at least 18 years old.

Your participation in this study is completely voluntary and you may withdraw at any time without penalty. If you choose to participate, it will take approximately 60-70 minutes of your time. You will also be given an option to participate in a follow-up survey, which will only take about 20 minutes of your time.

You will be watching a video that is approximately 20 minutes long and will be asked to respond to a questionnaire. Risks to you are minimal, and distress from participation is unlikely.

If you are participating in this study for class credits or if you are interested in participating in a lottery for one of the two $50 gift cards or one of the six $10 Barnes & Noble gift cards, you will only be requested to provide your SIUC Dawg Tag Number/course number or an email address. If you are participating in this study for course credits, your teaching assistant and instructor will only be notified that you participated in the study and will not know the information or responses that you provided. Your SIUC Dawg Tag Number or email addresses will NOT be linked to your responses on the questionnaire; NO IP addresses will be recorded. Participants’ SIUC Dawg Tag Numbers/course numbers, email addresses, and their survey responses will be kept in separate files and locations. All of your responses will only be available to the researchers in this study. Therefore, providing such information to receive class credits or gift cards will NOT affect the anonymity and confidentiality of your responses. We will take all reasonable steps to protect your identity. Please feel free to be honest when completing the questionnaires.

This study is under the supervision of Dr. Yu-Wei Wang, Associate Professor of Psychology at Southern Illinois University Carbondale. If you have any questions, concerns, or feedback on this study, please feel free to contact Dr. Wang by email at
